de Musicus en Componist J. G. Wolfgang Mozart van Saltzburg,
die maar 8 Jaaren oud is, heeft zyne uitmuntende Gaaven aan
het Stadhouderlyk Hof laaten hooren, en draagt de verwonde-
ring en goedkeuring van een yder weg: In de Haarlemsche
Courant van den 16 February laatstleden, in ’t Artykel van Lon-
den van den 8sten van die Maand, is van dat Muzicalisch Won-
der in ’t breede gewaagd.

The Hague, 19 September. [...]
[...] The renowned
musician and composer J. G. Wolfgang Mozart of Salzburg,
who is only 8 years old, has demonstrated his outstanding talents
at the Stadtholder’s court, receiving the admiration and approbation
of everyone: this musical marvel has been reported on at length
in the Haerlemsche Courant of 16 February last, in the London
article from the 8th of that month.
Mozart performed for Prince William V in the Hague on 18 Sep 1765, one day before this dated notice in the Oprechte Haerlemse Courant (see our entry for the notice in the Journal encyclopédique, which refers to the same performance). Notes
In his comprehensive study Mozart’s verblijf in Nederland en het muziekleven aldaar in de laatste helft der achttiende eeuw, D. F. Scheurleer quotes a notice similar to the one transcribed here that he attributes to the Leydse Courant of 20 Sep 1765 (Scheuleer 1883, 62 and Scheurleer 1909, i:157; see also Dokumente, 48, Dutch original, 512). However, the notice, often reproduced in the secondary literature using the text given by Scheurleer, is not actually present in the Leydse Courant for that date. We have not yet been able to locate Scheurleer’s source.
Deutsch’s transcription of the original Dutch of this notice is taken from Scheurleer (Dokumente, 512), but is not entirely accurate: Deutsch silently updates ‘y’ to the modern ‘ij’ (in words like “wyze”) and there are two other minor discrepancies. The corrected transcription is:
Tegenwoordig bevind zig alhier de beroemde Musicant J. G. Wolfgang
Mozart van Saltzburg, dewelke maar agt Jaaren oud is, en op eene
wonderbaare wyze de moejelykste Concerten en Solo’s van de be-
roemdste meesters, zooals ook verscheide van zyne eige compositie
executeerd. Deze jonge Musicant heeft zyne zoo uitmuntende Gaaven
aan het Stadhouderlyke Hof etc. laaten hooren en de Verwondering en
Goedkeuring van een ieder weggedragen.
