Commentary

The notice in the Salzburger Intelligenzblatt of 15 Sep 1787 regarding the auction of Leopold Mozart’s estate on 25 Sep has long been known to Mozart scholars (Dokumente, 261–62, citing Valentin 1943, 93). This earlier notice of Leopold’s death in the Intelligenzblatt of 2 Jun 1787 is mentioned, but not transcribed in Dokumente (258), in the commentary to the entry regarding Leopold’s death in the diary of Dominikus Hagenauer on 28 May 1787. The notice from the Intelligenzblatt is transcribed in Valentin 1943, 93, note 14. The cause of death given in the Intelligenzblatt is “Auszehr” (“Auszehrung,” consumption).

On the Salzburger Intelligenzblatt, its editor Lorenz Hübner, and the other Salzburg periodicals under his editorship from 1784 to 1799, see the commentary to the entry for 18 Jan 1787.
