Commentary

This report refers to the concerts of the Tonkünstler-Societät in the Burgtheater in Vienna on 22 and 23 Dec 1785. Mozart performed a piano concerto, quite likely his newest one, in E-flat, K. 482, at the concert on the 23rd.

This report closely mirrors, and is probably directly based on the report in the Wiener Zeitung on 24 Dec 1785 (Dokumente, 227–28), which gives a more detailed description of the reception of Mozart’s concerto: “Am zweyten Tage wechselte Hr. (“On the second day Herr Wolfgang Amade Mozart alternated with a concerto on the fortepiano of his own composition, the excellent reception of which we will say nothing, because adding our praise to the deserved fame of this well known and universally esteemed master would be superfluous.”)
